  • Prof. Mats Brittberg is a leading expert in cartilage repair, with over three decades of clinical and academic experience. He is a professor of orthopaedics at the University of Gothenburg and an orthopedic surgeon at Region Halland Orthopaedics, Varberg Hospital. He completed his specialization in 1985, passed the Swedish Orthopedic Board Exam in 1992, and earned his PhD in 1996.

    His research has focused on cartilage regeneration, particularly autologous chondrocyte implantation, as well as biotribology, joint preservation, and pain mechanisms. He has led numerous collaborative projects across Europe and North America and was the strategic leader of the Aspetar Sports Cartilage Center in Doha (2013–2018).

    Prof. Brittberg has held prominent positions in international societies, including President of ICRS (2006–2008), Chair of the ESSKA Cartilage Committee, and board member of TESi. He is Editor-in-Chief of the journal CARTILAGE and serves on editorial boards of leading journals in the field.

    He has received numerous honors, including the ICRS Genzyme Lifetime Achievement Award, the SKF Scientific Award, and the Swedish Medical Association Jubilee Medal. In 2023, he was named godfather of the ICRS Travelling Fellowship.
